  • In order to participate fully, you will need a functioning webcam and microphone. Please note that, for successful peer learning and engagement, participants must be on camera at multiple points during this session. The facilitator reserves the right to remove participants from the session if they do not participate via video.
  • Smartphone or similar device to participate in additional tech-enabled activities.
  • It is suggested you print out worksheets and other resources which will be provided prior to the session.
  • Stationery such as plain paper, pens, markers, and highlighters.


What is this programme about?


Adult learning is increasingly moving towards synchronous online learning, generally on video conferencing platforms. One of the major challenges for virtual learning facilitators is establishing and maintaining energy levels and engagement without physical presence. There are many advantages to this mode of delivery, and many of the skills used for face-to-face training can be applied in a virtual environment. For online learning sessions to be successful, it is vital that participants get off to a good start, and that participants quickly become comfortable with one another and are able to learn in a cohesive and relaxed manner from the outset.

Carefully chosen icebreakers and energizers can leverage on the way the human brain interacts with technology and have the power to transform a session, increasing engagement and connection between facilitator, learner, and content, enhancing retention, and reducing ‘Zoom fatigue’. Icebreakers and energizers are activities which are commonly used in adult education sessions. They can be used to bridge gaps between facilitators and participants, and make training sessions robust, cohesive, and effective. When used as part of a learning delivery strategy and designed to contribute towards meeting specific learning objectives, they are powerful and effective enhancers in any learning environment. They can be used at the beginning of a session to establish energy levels and create an atmosphere that is conducive to the learning process, and can be called upon throughout the session to reinvigorate learners whose energy levels may have dropped.

In this full-day interactive session, you will be introduced to 12 different icebreaker and energizer activities, learning about each one through first-hand experience, allowing you to see the activity from the students’ perspective. You will explore systematic techniques to choose the most suitable activities based on desired outcomes, and learn to facilitate these activities in an online learning context, grounded in information taken from Jessica Dang’s Technology and the Learning Brain resources. By participating in these activities with other workshop participants, you will be equipped to use these activities to their fullest potential, establishing an optimal learning climate for your learners.
