What is this programme about?

MOOCs or Massive Open Online Courses have captured the public’s imagination over the last few years with large class sizes, exceeding 200,000 online learners. But what are they and what impact will they have on our organisations? How are they different from the usual types of e-learning courses? What are the various e-designs adopted by MOOC developers and how can training institutions and organisations take advantage of these online course platforms to deliver training to their learners and staff?

An introduction to the current e-learning platforms available for learners e.g. Udemy, Canvas, Coursera and Udacity will be made to set the context for this session. Differences in terms of what the e-learning programmes on the various platforms entail would also be elaborated..

With Udemy and Coursera courses being made available to Singaporeans with SkillsFuture Credit, it will be of interest to adult educators and training organisations as they explore innovative approaches towards developing online programmes as part of their strategy to diversify their products.

In this session, you will consider the pedagogical designs required to make online courses effective for learning. The design limitations to some of the online platforms and how to circumvent them will be discussed. Subsequently, you will be guided to initiate the creation of your own online course on Udemy.

By putting you, the learners, through the creation process, you will become familiar with key features and functionalities such as course types, quality requirements, pricing models, marketing options available on the Udemy platform. You will also design your own storyboards for validation and coaching in class.

What does it cover?

At the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Describe one’s pedagogical beliefs
  • Describe and apply key design principles when preparing for the storyboarding process
  • Analyse 2 MOOC platforms for their features to enhance learning effectiveness
