AEGIS Building and Engineering

AEGIS Building and Engineering

At a Glance

AEGIS Building and Engineering (AEGIS) seeks to build an inclusive culture by focusing its efforts to equip trainees from the Association of Persons with Special Needs (APSN) with the right job skills to perform at their roles.

In a broader perspective, AEGIS seeks to provide opportunities for its APSN trainees to apply their new skillsets in the workplace thereby allowing them to gain employability in the hospitality sector.

In support of this objective, AEGIS embarked on a Learning Enterprise Alliance (LEA) project under the NACE@IAL initiative in 2018.

Achievements

The project team together with support from Management and inputs from IAL's Certified Workplace Learning Specialist, achieved the following:
  1. 100% of APSN trainees learnt better from the simple and structured OJT system
  2. 100% of Supervisors and Chargehands have a better understanding in managing and training PWIDs such as APSN trainees
  3. All APSN trainees are equipped with the right job skills to apply in the workplace to gain employability

"The LEA project was timely and supported AEGIS to transit into employing APSN graduates to explore new work opportunities in the hospitality industry as tradesmen. The learning aids developed for the three work tasks were essential learning tools to support the new tradesmen at work. This is the beginning of a meaningful journey for the people with special needs to gain independence when they are gainfully employed."
- Mr. Yeong Wai Teck, Managing Director

"The project has been an enriching and experiential journey working with IAL's Certified Workplace Learning Specialist, colleagues, ASPN and its graduates. The learning aids which include the visual aids and videos, have supported the APSN trainees in the learning process, with focus on learning progressively at the worksite. I have also personally learnt from the IAL Learning Specialist on the requirements of developing effective learning aids and learning videos."
- Mr. Helmy Sarpan, Corporate Admin Manager

Challenges

As part of the built environment industry, AEGIS needed to address short term manpower needs and to pave way for long term transformation plans. It is therefore, imperative to develop the skills of its tradesmen by providing work opportunities to graduates from Institute for Technical Education and APSN to support their clients in the hospitality sector with skilled workforce in planned maintenance.

Interventions

The project team started to improve existing OJT training system for both Supervisors and Chargehands as well as design learning resources:
  • Implementation of communication sessions and observational learning workshop for Supervisors and Chargehands to guide, understand and work with PWIDs and pictorial guides through smart phone

  • Creation of Learning Resources:
    • Learning videos and step-by-step pictorial guides
    • A learning guide for quick reference to the learning resources
    • A learning platform for easy access to videos

  • Improvement of current OJT system to support skills development of APSN trainees as well as provision of guidance and observation opportunities: Supervisors' brief to Chargehands on using the videos and pictorial guides

  • Empowerment of APSN trainees by Chargehands to pursue self-directed learning, i.e. watching videos and using the pictorial guides on personal mobile phones
