Schneider Electric Asia (Schneider), as part of the manufacturing industry, seeks to improve the knowledge and skills of new hires through a workplace transformation project with the Learning Enterprise Alliance (LEA) project under the NACE@IAL in 2019. As a result, the enterprise successfully managed to get its new hires to achieve operational readiness status within 2 weeks, and at the same time, increase employee productivity by 30% with On-The-Job Training (OJT) Programme.Achievements
The project team together with support from Management and inputs from IAL's Certified Workplace Learning Specialist, achieved the following:- Achievement of new hires' operational readiness status within 2 weeks with OJT blueprint for Picking Process; new hires were knowledgeable and skilled to pick 8 lines per 30 minutes, as per KPI
- Improvement of existing staff productivity by 30% with the OJT Programme
- Empowerment of Project Champion to develop an OJT blueprint for MHE Programme
"With Schneider’ s participation in LEA, we have noticed behavioural changes in Tian Yang, our Warehouse Assistant after going through the OJT programme. He became more outspoken and confident in guiding and training his team through clear explanations in his training. Also, after the OJT programme, the learning cycle for new hires was reduced by half with lesser quality escalations requiring attention. Thank you to our Certified Workplace Learning Specialist and IAL."
- Mr. Ng Guo Jun, Distribution Centre Manager
The OJT Programme has shown us, how we should implement different approaches towards different learners and the OJT Train-the-Trainer Programme helps to ensure that all team leaders are aligned with the various procedures. With the new skills learnt from the OJT blueprint for Picking Process, I was also empowered to develop another OJT blueprint for MHE programme.
- Mr. Muhammad Zulhilmi, Warehouse Learning Coordinator
Challenges
Being part of the manufacturing industry, challenges such as rising labour costs in a labour-intensive sector are common for enterprises like Schneider. The need to maximise staff productivity and efficiency whilst balancing the adoption of technology and automation to assist staff at work becomes imperative. Through a workplace transformation project with NACE@IAL, Schneider aims to develop their staff to be learner-centric aligned to their core value of ‘ Learn Every Day’ through workplace learning initiatives and interventions.Interventions
The project team's approach involved the following:- Implementation of an OJT programme (with OJT blueprint) for the Picker job role as well as an OJT Train-the-Trainer programme for Team Leaders
- Empowerment of supervisors to conduct workplace assessments on the new Pickers to determine competency level to evaluate OJT effectiveness.
- Expansion of Orientation for new hires and with the incorporation of a realistic mock-up of the warehouse process in training room
- Creation of learning resources to empower Pickers:
- 1 OJT Programme on Picking Process
- 1 OJT Train-the-Trainer Programme
- Assessment Records for the OJT Programme
- 4 OJT Videos on Picking
- Revised Job Description mapped to Skills Framework for Logistics
