Expert Session: Systems Thinking Lite - Navigating Boundaries for Effective Delivery and Change
What is this session about?
Many workplace challenges today are not due to lack of effort, but because we are working on parts of the system without fully seeing how they connect. Teams optimise locally, yet outcomes at the organisational level remain fragmented or slow to materialise.
This session introduces a practical approach to systems thinking, focusing on how to see, understand, and work with the interdependencies that shape outcomes across teams and functions.
Participants will explore how everyday challenges such as delays, misalignment, rework, or competing priorities are often symptoms of how the system is structured, rather than isolated issues. The focus is on shifting from reacting to problems, to seeing patterns and relationships across the system.
At the core of the session is a hands-on activity, where participants will:
- Map how work, decisions, and dependencies flow across teams
- Identify where bottlenecks, duplication, or unintended consequences arise
- Surface trade-offs between speed, quality, and coordination
Through this process, participants will begin to see how small decisions in one part of the system can create ripple effects elsewhere.
The session introduces a set of practical lenses, including:
- Seeing interconnections rather than isolated tasks
- Recognising patterns over time, not just one-off events
- Understanding trade-offs and unintended consequences in decision-making
Participants will leave with:
- A clearer way to diagnose delivery challenges beyond surface symptoms
- Practical tools to map and communicate system-level issues
- Greater confidence in navigating complexity across teams and stakeholders
Ultimately, improving delivery is not just about managing tasks more efficiently, but about working with the system as a whole.
