What Is This Session About?

Turn your existing lessons into industry-relevant learning in one day. As Singapore’s economy shifts, educators face the challenge of ensuring training keeps pace with rapid sector transformations. Using Merrill’s First Principles as a pedagogical framework, this practical intermediate-level workshop provides a repeatable method to identify relevance gaps and redesign activities for authentic workplace applications.

Participants will apply the 60-Second Relevance Test to move lessons from being generic to specific, anchoring learning in real-world roles, data, and artefacts. Through a Deconstruction-to-Reconstruction methodology, you will analyse a generic lesson scenario (S1) and reconstruct it into an ITR-aligned activity (S2). You will leave the session with ready-to-use templates, a redesigned activity, and a bank of sector-specific scenarios to ensure your training stays ahead of industry needs

What Does The Session Cover?

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to apply a systematic method based on Merrill’s First Principles to achieve the following:

Knowledge:
K1: Explain the value of contextualisation and the core components of Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction in the context of adult learning.

Abilities:
S1: Analyse a given lesson plan using a structured template to identify at least three industry-relevance gaps based on real-world roles, data, and artefacts.

S2: Adapt one learning activity to a selected ITR sector scenario, providing a clear rationale and evidence plan for authentic workplace application.

Who Is It Suitable For?

  • Instructional Designers and Curriculum Developers: Professionals responsible for creating and updating training materials to meet industry standards.
  • Learning & Development Specialists: Individuals tasked with aligning corporate training programmes with organisational and sector-wide transformation goals.
  • Trainers and Educators in Adult Education: Practitioners looking to enhance the authenticity and impact of their classroom facilitation through contextualisation.
  • Technical Leads and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs): Experts who need a structured framework to translate technical industry data into effective learning experiences.
