What Is This Session About?
As online and blended learning become increasingly common, educators face the challenge of creating learning experiences that not only engage learners but also foster meaningful interaction, critical thinking and deep learning. This challenge is particularly important when designing for adult learners, who bring diverse experiences, goals and expectations to the learning environment.
This programme introduces adult educators, learning and development professionals, instructional designers and workplace learning practitioners to the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework and its application in online learning design. Participants will explore strategies for building social, cognitive and teaching presence, while leveraging AI-powered tools to enhance learner engagement and support course development.
Through discussions, hands-on design activities, group work, presentations and peer feedback, participants will apply CoI principles to design and evaluate online learning experiences. By the end of the programme, participants will be able to create more engaging, learner-centred online courses that promote collaboration, reflection and effective learning in real-world educational and workplace contexts.
What Does The Session Cover?
1. Identify the key elements of the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework (social, cognitive, and teaching presence) and their roles in creating effective online learning environments.
2. Recall strategies for fostering social, cognitive, and teaching presences in online learning design.
Skills-based learning objectives: what participants will be able to do at the end of the workshop (their application)
1. Apply CoI Principles to Online Learning: Design learning activities and interactions that promote collaboration, critical thinking, and effective communication in an adult education context.
2. Analyze Online Learning Design through the CoI Lens: Evaluate how social, cognitive, and teaching presence are fostered in various online learning environments.
