Song Fish Dealer (SF), a leading supplier of frozen seafood and poultry to hotel chains and fine-dining restaurants, seeks to enhance staff productivity through upskilling and automating existing Warehouse Assistants’ (WAs) job and work processes. With the development of On-The-Job-Training (OJT) blueprints, the enterprise saw an 8% improvement in the productivity of existing WAs.In support of this objective, SF embarked on a Learning Enterprise Alliance (LEA) project under the NACE@IAL initiative in 2019.
Achievements
The project team together with support from Management and inputs from IAL's Certified Workplace Learning Specialist, achieved the following:- Increase in productivity by 8% after WAs received inbound goods training
- All staff strongly agreed that work processes and work execution are clearer and more systematic based on the newly created job descriptions
- Work execution becomes clearer and more straightforward
- After the implementation of OJT, all WAs know how and what to do, thus improving the productivity of goods received via the WMS
"Learning is a journey that we need to pursue continuously. By joining the LEA, we know that we are exposed to a pool of knowledge and network, and they will be able to help us to promote continuous learning in the workplace."
- Ms. Dorothy Lim, Director
Challenges As the food manufacturing sector has been identified as a key growth sector, SF sought to remain self-sufficient and globally competitive. To do so, enterprises have to innovate, adopt food technologies to accelerate production as well as build deeper capabilities to upskill employees to deal with digitalisation and automation to support industry transformation.
Interventions
The project team started to design and implement an OJT programme, which includes:- Development of work processes ‘ Purchase to warehouse storage’ and ‘ WMS Inbound work flow’ that outlined the workflow from the purchase of goods to the storage at the warehouse
- Development of a workplace learning plan for WAs to receive inbound goods
