Credit Transfer is the Institute for Adult Learning’s (IAL) Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway for recognising prior formal learning.
Credit Transfer recognises prior learning from programmes that have been evaluated by IAL and approved for mapping to eligible modules within an IAL programme. The applicable credit exemptions are subject to the overall 50% RPL cap.
Credit Transfer supports two groups:
- Graduates: Graduates of programmes listed in the Credit Transfer Table may apply for the corresponding credit exemption(s) when enrolling in an eligible IAL programme.
- Institutions and training providers: If a programme is not yet listed, the institution or training provider may approach IAL for a fee-based, programme-level curriculum evaluation and mapping. If approved, the programme may be added to the Credit Transfer Table, allowing eligible graduates to apply for the corresponding credit exemption(s).
For Individual Applicants
Who Can Apply?
You may apply if you are a graduate of a programme that is already listed in IAL's Credit Transfer Table and your programme/version corresponds to an approved module exemption.
If your programme is not listed, your institution or training provider will need to first approach IAL for formal institutional curriculum evaluation and mapping. Read the segment on ‘For Institutions and Training Providers’ below.
Individual Application Process
- Step 1Check the Credit Transfer Table
- Step 2Confirm your programme/
version and eligible module(s) - Step 3Upload your qualification certificate and transcript
- Step 4Submit application and make payment
- Step 5IAL verifies your records
- Step 6Receive your Credit Transfer application outcome
Indicative Processing Time
Approximately 14 working days from receipt of a complete application. If the applicant is requested to furnish additional supporting documents for further verification, processing time may be longer.
Outcome
Successful applicants receive credit exemptions from the corresponding approved IAL programme module(s), subject to programme rules and the prevailing RPL policy. Applicants must successfully complete the remaining programme requirements with IAL to attain the full qualification. Note that Statement of Attainments (SOAs) will NOT be awarded to applicants who receive credit exemptions from the module(s) applied. Exempted modules will be reflected in the programme transcript only.
Documents and Fees
The application should require the qualification certificate and transcript, along with any other documents specified in the application form. A non-refundable application fee applies.
Application Fee
*The fee is inclusive of prevailing GST and subject to changes. Fees paid are non-refundable.
For Institutions and Training Providers
If a programme is not listed in the Credit Transfer Table, the programme provider may approach IAL to have its curriculum evaluated for potential mapping to an eligible IAL programme. Institutional curriculum mapping is a fee-based, programme-level academic evaluation.
What does institutional curriculum mapping assess?
IAL reviews the programme to determine the extent of alignment with the relevant IAL programme. The evaluation criteria may include:
• Alignment with the relevant IAL programme learning outcomes
• Curriculum coverage, depth, relevance and currency
• Assessment design and rigour
• Evidence supporting the claimed alignment
The institutional curriculum mapping process is therefore an academic and quality assurance review rather than an automatic recognition exercise.
Institutional Curriculum Mapping Process
- Step 1 Institution Requests Curriculum Mapping
- Step 2 IAL Provides Application Template / Checklist
- Step 3 Institution Submits All Required Documents and Makes Payment
- Step 4 IAL Conducts Academic Evaluation and Quality Review
- Step 5 IAL Notifies Institution of The Curriculum Mapping Decision
- Step 6 Mapped Programme / Module is Listed in IAL's Credit Transfer Table
Important to Note
- Institutional curriculum mapping is a one-time academic evaluation of a programme against the relevant IAL programme requirements. It does not automatically confer Credit Transfer on every graduate.
- Eligible graduates still submit individual Credit Transfer applications after an institutional curriculum mapping is approved.
- Material changes to curriculum structure, duration, learning outcomes, content or assessment design may require re-mapping to keep the recognition current and accurate.
- Curriculum evaluation may take up to approximately three months after a complete submission is accepted for processing.
Documents and Fees
Institutional curriculum mapping is a fee-based service.
